WOMEN IN JUSTICE CENTERS - WESTERN CHAPTER
The Women in Justice Centers Committee of Women Human Rights Defenders was established to unite and strengthen women defenders within the social justice movement. The committee brings together women affiliated with Justice Centers, providing a coordinated platform to organize, advocate, and tackle systemic injustices faced by women and girls, especially those from marginalized and oppressed communities.
WIJC was formed to address the barriers women encounter, including isolation, limited resources, restricted access to legal support, and societal or institutional resistance. By creating a formal committee within the social justice movement, women defenders can collaborate, share knowledge, amplify their voices, and tackle systemic issues more effectively while linking their work to community-based justice centers. The committee's work spans the Lake Region, including Kakamega, Kisumu, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Migori. We engage grassroots women, women defenders, survivors of gender-based violence, and other marginalized groups whose voices are often excluded from decision-making and governance processes.
WIJC’s identity is rooted in solidarity, advocacy, and movement-building. As a committee within the social justice movement, we empower women defenders to be organized, visible, and effective in championing justice and equality for themselves and their communities.
